It’s been one helluva year – holiday season is almost here!

It’s been one helluva year, 2020. And so, as it gradually draws to a close, many South Africans will be looking forward to the holiday season. This is typically the time to switch your mind off work, prepare for the festive season, just chill, or hang-out with friends. Typically it is also the time when we spend more money on gifts, parties, spending our bonuses (for those lucky enough to receive such a blessing) on luxury items, or new clothes, or going away on holiday.

At this time mental health is a particular challenge to those living with limited resources, like the unemployed, those struggling on low income, even those with limited savings. Now many are battling to simply survive. Most are somehow worried about their future survival, even if it just boils down to paying the bills.

We all use these superficial greetings, hiding behind the familiar to avoid reality. It’s convenient, but it’s not really truthful. Truth is that with Covid-19 most of us are having a rough time. So don’t pretend to be brave, hanging in there with a smiling face, just waiting for life to return normal. It probably won’t.
