Movember (aka November) is not just about who can grow the best facial hair. It’s an in-your-face reminder to focus on the health issues that matter most to men.
- Preserve prostate health
Prostate screening is a must from age 45 – younger if there’s a family history of breast or prostate cancer. Difficulty urinating or the frequent urge to go can be warning signs of prostate cancer.
- Check your testicles
Testicular cancer affects mainly young men (15-35), and has an excellent cure rate when it’s discovered and treated early. Make it a monthly habit to check your testicles for anything out of the ordinary (lumps, discomfort/pain, size changes, or heat and redness). See your doctor right away if there’s anything unusual.
- Know your numbers
A healthy heart is a happy heart. Managing your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels will reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and erectile dysfunction.
- Don’t bottle it up
We have a culture of ‘men don’t cry’, but talking about your problems and feelings is a sign of strength, not weakness. Don’t be afraid to confide in a trusted friend or seek professional help if you need it.
- Bust the boep
That spare tyre around your waist can increase your risk of various health issues, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. If you want to scale down, focus on a balanced diet, limit alcohol, avoid tobacco and stay active.
